The Post-Baccalaureate Research Program (PREP) at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) offers research training for recent graduates of undergraduate colleges and universities who are interested in pursuing research careers in the biomedical sciences. Tufts PREP trainees perform one year of fully supported research work on a hypothesis-driven problem in a field of their choosing. During this research apprenticeship they are mentored by members of the GSBS Graduate Faculty.

Trainees receive a stipend, health benefits and tuition. The program is funded in part by a National Institute of Health grant designed to increase the number of people from groups currently under-represented in biomedical science research as defined by the NIH who enter research careers.

Training Overview

PREP prepares you to be a successful applicant for quality PhD or MD/PhD biomedical research training. About 75% of PREP Scholar time is spent conducting research under the guidance of your faculty mentor and your research committee.

Trainees are integrated into a graduate program and interact with graduate students by participating in courses, workshops, seminars and a graduate retreat.

PREP Training

Applying to PREP

Most biomedical PhD training programs value applicants who have strong research experience. However, many people who wish to enter research training have not had the requisite experience. The PREP is designed to provide the research experiences that make its participants highly sought-after applicants for graduate schools.

Applicants apply to PREP using the GSBS online application portal

Successful applicants typically begin their PREP year on July 1.
