Translational Research & Personalized Training

The Immunology PhD program provides rigorous training in basic molecular and cellular immunology, the immunology of chronic diseases, and the pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of inflammatory diseases, including infections.

The Immunology Program also participates fully in the MS in Biomedical Research (MBR), providing additional opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and flexible academic pathways.

Immunology Program Guide

Own Your Scientific Discovery

From day one, you’ll take the lead on your thesis project, developing the independence, confidence, and critical thinking skills needed to become a successful scientist. By driving your own research, you’ll graduate prepared to lead innovation in academia, biotechnology, or industry.

Through the MERGE-Inflammation program, students also have the opportunity to connect their discoveries to real-world clinical challenges, gaining insight into how immunological discoveries translate into medical advances and patient care.

Learn from Leading Immunology Researchers

Learn from expert faculty across Tufts University School of Medicine, the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, and the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Working alongside internationally recognized researchers whose expertise spans molecular and cellular immunology, inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases, and translational science, students benefit from frequent one-on-one mentorship, personalized guidance, timely feedback, and dedicated support that fosters both scientific and professional growth.

Immunology Labs & Research

Integrated Curriculum

The Immunology PhD curriculum provides advanced training in molecular and cellular immunology, inflammatory diseases, and translational research. Students complete foundational coursework, seminars, workshops, clinical experiences, and four laboratory rotations to explore research areas and identify the right dissertation lab and mentor. The curriculum is Grounded in the role of immunology in diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and neurological conditions, the curriculum prepares students to investigate complex health challenges through innovative research
