Research/Areas of Interest
The glycocalyx is an information-dense network of oligosaccharides that adorn a cell’s surface. With no known exceptions, all living cells possess in some form a glycocalyx; implying a fundamental importance. Despite this, interactions between glycans and immune cells remain poorly characterized.
The Argüeso lab specializes in ocular surface glycobiology, with an emphasis on deciphering how the glycocalyx on human and murine corneal cells remodel in response to inflammation. My current project within the lab focuses on the potential immunogenicity of certain sugar moieties on limbal progenitor cells, a tissue stem cell population vital for maintenance of ocular homeostasis and preserving vision.
