The Immunology PhD program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences who are committed to scientific discovery and advancing biomedical research. Selection Criteria

The Immunology PhD admissions committee seeks applicants who demonstrate academic preparation, research potential, scientific curiosity, and a commitment to becoming independent researchers.

Competitive applicants typically have:

  • Strong academic preparation in the sciences
  • Meaningful laboratory research experience during or after undergraduate study
  • Clear research interests aligned with immunology and related biomedical fields
  • The potential to contribute to a collaborative and student-centered scientific community

Research experience is highly valued but is not required. Applicants are evaluated through their academic record, letters of recommendation, and application essays.

Immunology PhD Prerequisites

Successful applicants typically have a strong foundation in the biological sciences and demonstrated interest in research. Applicants should have completed:

  • At least one year of college-level biology
  • At least one year of college-level mathematics
  • General and organic chemistry coursework

Although not required, successful completion of courses in biochemistry, cell biology and genetics are assets for graduate biomedical study. Most of our current students majored in a biological science during their undergraduate years.

Interview Process

Selected applicants will be invited to an in-person interview. Interviews include conversations with faculty and current students, and opportunities to explore the program’s collaborative environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. A master’s degree is not required to apply to the Tufts PhD in Immunology program. Applicants typically enter the program with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field, along with strong preparation in biology, chemistry, and other foundational sciences. 

  • While not required, research experience is highly valued and strengthens your application.
