From Tufts PDD to Postdoctoral Research: Meet Qingchen Zhang
For Qingchen Zhang, PDD26, the MS in Pharmacology and Drug Development (PDD) program at Tufts provided more than advanced scientific training. It served as a launching pad for doctoral studies, published research, and a career in clinical pharmacology. Now a Postdoctoral Scholar at Tufts University, Zhang credits the program's rigorous curriculum, faculty mentorship, and strong research opportunities with helping him achieve his academic and professional goals.
What inspired you to pursue the MS in Pharmacology and Drug Development?
"After graduating with a degree in pharmacology and gaining six months of experience working in industry, I decided to pursue further education in the biotechnology field. My father encouraged me to study abroad, believing that an international education would help broaden my horizons and develop a more global perspective and mindset."
Why did you choose Tufts for your graduate education?
"Boston is one of the world's leading centers for biotechnology and pharmaceutical research, and Tufts University has an excellent reputation among universities in the Boston area. In addition, the Pharmacology and Drug Development program is well recognized for its strong education and training in pharmacology."
Can you tell us about your research interests?
"My research focuses on drug metabolism and clinical pharmacology. The main questions I aim to address are how we can use in vitro methods to predict a drug's behavior in the body and how drug administration can be optimized to achieve the best therapeutic effect."
How would you describe your experience in the PDD program?
"In addition to the required coursework, I completed research rotations with Dr. Emmanuel N. Pothos and Dr. David J. Greenblatt and received co-mentorship from both professors. My thesis, titled 'The Mechanism of Dasabuvir Inhibition of Acetaminophen Glucuronidation,' was later developed into a publication in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology."
What was your favorite aspect of the program?
"There are three aspects of the program that impressed me the most. First, the program provides training that is very similar to PhD-level education, which prepared me extremely well for my later doctoral studies. When I began my PhD, many aspects of the coursework and research environment were already familiar to me. Second, the faculty members in the program have very strong academic backgrounds and extensive expertise in their fields. Third, the support from the program extends far beyond my time at Tufts. The faculty have continued to provide guidance and support throughout my PhD research and professional development."
What accomplishment are you most proud of from your time at Tufts?
"One accomplishment I am particularly proud of is contributing to research that resulted in the publication 'Evaluating Reversible Inhibitory Drug-Drug Interactions: Enzyme Kinetics, and In Vitro-to-In Vivo Scaling Models' in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Although the article was published later, the majority of the work was completed during my time at Tufts."
How did the program help you advance your professional goals?
"The program provided me with strong academic training and a solid research background, which played an important role in my successful application to the Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research program at the University of Florida, a highly competitive program in the field."
What would you like prospective students to know about the Tufts PDD program?
"The Tufts PDD program is a unique and exceptional program among universities in the United States. It offers an excellent opportunity to build a strong foundation for your future and can be an important starting point for turning your academic and professional goals into reality."
