Q&A with Hunter Russell, PhD Student in Genetics, Molecular & Cellular Biology

Hunter Russell is a PhD student in the Genetics, Molecular & Cellular Biology (GMCB) program at Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, working under the mentorship of Katya Heldwein, PhD. Hunter is focused on becoming a well-rounded and impactful scientist, driven by both curiosity and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the scientific community.
Why did you choose to pursue this degree?
"I want to become an effective and efficient scientist. That way I can contribute to science in ways that will both improve our understanding of the world around us and the lives of many."
Why did you choose Tufts to pursue your degree?
"I chose Tufts because of the community. Not only is the science being done here amazing, but so are the people, making for a very welcoming and collaborative environment."
What is the focus of your research, and what questions are you trying to answer?
"My research focuses on Herpes Simplex Virus and understanding the mechanism of how the virus enters cells."
Describe your experience in the program:
"So far I have had a great experience at Tufts. I have a great mentor who is supportive but still pushes me to be the best scientist I can be. In addition, almost everyone I meet—PIs, postdocs, grad students—are kind and helpful. Overall, I think Tufts provides a great environment to prepare students with all the skills they need to succeed as scientists."
What is your favorite aspect about the program?
"My favorite aspect of GMCB is the diversity of labs and the different fields of study available. I was initially unsure about what area of science I wanted to pursue, but GMCB allowed me to explore topics like immunology, cancer, aging, and virology. The courses and journal clubs also give you the chance to dive into various disciplines."
What are some of your favorite ways to recharge outside of the lab or classroom?
"I enjoy spending time with my cohort and lab during hangouts or outings. I also love exploring Boston—especially trying new restaurants or going to shows. The city's proximity to green spaces like the Arboretum, the Fells, or the Blue Hills is another huge plus. Walks in nature are one of my favorite ways to recharge during the spring and summer."
What is your proudest academic/professional accomplishment while at Tufts?
"I’m proud that the preliminary data I collected early in my lab was used in an R01 grant application that got funded."
What do you wish to accomplish upon graduation?
"I’d love to publish a high-impact paper and attend an international conference—especially since the furthest I’ve traveled so far is Canada!"
What do you want a prospective student to know about Tufts?
"Tufts is a very supportive and collaborative environment. From faculty to fellow students, people are willing to help you succeed. The support and guidance you need is here—you just have to ask."
