What is the ultimate goal of your research?

As someone who started into research from the clinical care aspect, the dream is always to find something in the lab that can affect how we treat patients. Of course, the reality (or at least my reality) is that some of the stuff I find most interesting has no chance of ever having any clinical utility. So we try to balance what we do in our lab between practical "applied science" like creating diagnostics or preventative measures for Lyme disease with answering basic questions of host-pathogen biology that excite us.

What excites you about your research?

The daily give and take between me and the people in my laboratory stimulates my thinking. I am constantly learning new stuff from everyone.

What do you like best about GSBS students?

GSBS students have great enthusiasm and I really like their camaraderie and support for each other.

What qualities distinguish GSBS from other graduate schools?

I think the friendly and collaborative atmosphere really breeds a culture where the people who are here are really passionate in their love for the institution.

What do you do to relax?

I play Ultimate Frisbee.

What is your favorite Boston restaurant?

There are too many to name. For Chinese seafood, I love Asian Garden in Chinatown. For snacks, I am addicted to the heavy cream bread and the croissants at the Japanese Bakery in Brookline. And I have a soft spot for Franklin Café in the South End since that was one of the first dates I had with my wife. Oh, and of course there is the McDonalds across the street!
