Learn about respiratory infections from GSBS alum Hayley Muendlein

GSBS alum Hayley Muendlein explains how viruses like influenza and SARS-CoV-2 can cause more serious disease when bacterial infections are also present.
SARS-CoV-2 and cells

Hayley Muendlein, a graduate of the GSBS Genetics program and a Research Assistant Professor of Immunology at Tufts University School of Medicine, has written a piece in The Conversation that helps us understand how a secondary bacterial infection in the presence of an influenza or SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to much more serious disease.

As she notes, "Understanding the synergy between these microbes is critical not only for effective diagnosis and treatment, but also for managing current pandemics and preventing future ones."

Hayley's work and that of her colleagues are helping to unravel this puzzle.
