Dean's Message - May 22, 2023

Dean Jay offers his thoughts on his time leading GSBS.
Jaharis Building in the spring

Dear GEBS Community

As was announced on May 15, I will be stepping down as Dean on June 30. I have always viewed the Deanship not as a position of power, but as a position of service. I agreed to take this position to pay it forward because Lou Lasagna, David Stollar and especially Naomi Rosenberg, who preceded me, gave of themselves for the benefit of our school.

Over six years that were sometime arduous (the COVID pandemic comes to mind), being Dean has been a labor of love. I feel privileged and honored to have been our school’s steward. You have all been valuable allies as we have built programs for DEI, career exploration and wellness to add to our existing research excellence and for this I am immensely grateful. During commencement last week, I experienced the joy of seeing yet another class emerge as rigorous and humane scientists who will positively impact on the world. I know that Mike Chin, who will serve as interim Dean, will bring the same compassion and thoughtfulness to the job that I have always strived to give GSBS. I hope that you students, faculty, and staff will show Mike the same collegiality and kindness you have shown me as we worked together to build a better school.

Dan Jay, Dean
