Dean's Message - June 26, 2023

Dean Jay's final thoughts as he prepares to step down at the end of June
Jaharis Building in the spring

Dear GSBS Community,

This is my last Dean’s Comment. I want to take a moment to thank you all for your help in making GSBS a school to be proud of. I look forward to turning the reins over to Mike Chin and know that he will be a supportive and kind Dean who will advocate for our students.

I said in my last message that I would reserve my final Dean’s Comment to praise Associate Dean Dan Volchok. Dan’s knowledge and understanding of graduate students – stemming from his doctorate in higher education – made him the perfect complement to my own background in biomedical science. Dan served many roles in the Dean’s Office; operations manager, curriculum reviewer, compliance officer, and more. Most of all, as an unofficial Dean of Students, he oversaw your research, ensured the rigor of your thesis work, and lent a kind ear during troubled times. For me, he was a true partner and helped with creative solutions to benefit all students and programs. He provided wise counsel and ensured the smooth running of all aspects of GSBS, overseeing our excellent staff. Most of all, he did all this with good nature, good humor, and a mission to do what was best and fair for all GSBS students. It was an honor to serve with him.

Dan Jay, PhD, Dean
