About the Program

  • The Experiential PhD Program at Tufts GSBS offers industry professionals the opportunity to earn a PhD while continuing to work. The program focuses on drug discovery, biomedical research, and therapeutics, with an emphasis on rigorous academic standards and real-world applications.

  • This newly launched program is designed for industry professionals with a master’s degree in a relevant field who are currently employed in the biotech, pharma, or related sectors.

  • If your company is not yet an industry sponsor, qualified applicants from any employer may enroll through the self-pay option. These students are responsible for all tuition and fees but may seek reimbursement through employer education benefits. All financial arrangements must be made in advance between the employee and their employer.

  • Students will typically complete the program within 3-5 years.

  • The program is full-time, requiring students to meet all the academic requirements of a traditional PhD while balancing their professional responsibilities. Companies are expected to adjust work hours to support students' academic commitments.

Admissions & Eligibility

  • Path 1: Employer Full Sponsorship

    Candidates must hold a master’s degree and be employed by a participating company. The company must agree to sponsor the student’s participation in the program.

    Candidates must be nominated by their employer to apply for the program. Employers evaluate potential applicants internally and provide a Letter of Certification and Recommendation for selected employees. Only employees who have been formally selected by their company should proceed with the application process. Applicants without employer endorsement are not eligible to apply for sponsorship.

    Path 2: Self-Pay Option

    If your company does not participate as a sponsor, qualified candidates may still apply through the self-pay option. Self-paying students are responsible for all tuition and fees but may seek reimbursement through their employer’s education benefits, if applicable. All financial arrangements should be made directly between the employee and employer in advance.

Program Features & Structure

  • Students pick an area of specialization and follow that PhD's curriculum and requirements. The program combines hybrid learning options, on-campus engagement, and rigorous research. Each student works under the guidance of a Thesis Advisory Committee, including industry and Tufts faculty advisors.
