PhD in Biomedical Therapeutics Program FAQs

The Experiential PhD Program at Tufts GSBS offers industry professionals the opportunity to earn a PhD while continuing to work. The program focuses on drug discovery, biomedical research, and therapeutics, with an emphasis on rigorous academic standards and real-world applications.

This program is designed for accomplished professionals with master’s degrees who are currently employed by partnering biotech or pharmaceutical companies.

If your company is not yet a partner, we encourage you to discuss the program with your employer and explore their interest in becoming a partner with Tufts. Students will typically complete the program within 3-5 years.

The program is full-time, requiring students to meet all the academic requirements of a traditional PhD while balancing their professional responsibilities. Companies are expected to adjust work hours to support students' academic commitments.

Candidates must hold a master’s degree and be employed by a partnering company. The company must agree to sponsor the student’s participation in the program.

Candidates must be nominated by their employer to apply for the program. Employers evaluate potential applicants internally and provide a Letter of Certification and Recommendation for selected employees. Only employees who have been formally selected by their company should proceed with the application process. Applicants without employer endorsement are not eligible to apply.

No, the GRE is not required for this program.

Students pick an area of specialization and follow that PhD's curriculum and requirements. The program combines hybrid learning options, on-campus engagement, and rigorous research. Each student works under the guidance of a Thesis Advisory Committee, including industry and Tufts faculty advisors.

Students will choose from the following specialized fields:

• Genetics, Molecular & Cellular Biology 
• Immunology 
• Molecular Microbiology 
• Neuroscience
• Pharmacology & Drug Development (*GSBS program available is currently a master’s however those in the experiential PhD may focus on this area)

While in-person attendance is strongly encouraged, hybrid options will be available for most classes. Please note that some small group sessions may be held in person only.

The TAC provides guidance and support throughout your PhD journey, ensuring the academic rigor and integrity of your research.

Your employer covers all tuition and program-related costs, allowing you to complete your PhD at no personal financial expense.

Yes, you will remain employed, but your company is expected to adjust your work hours to accommodate the program’s academic requirements.
