The Building Diversity in Biomedical Sciences (BDBS) Program provides a mentored, 10-week research intensive experience for 16 to 20 undergraduates who are interested in pursuing PhD or MD/PhD training upon completion of the baccalaureate degree.  Biomedical science is a rapidly evolving and engaging field that holds tremendous promise for discoveries that will change the lives of all people by improving detection and treatment of disease.

Funded by the NIH, BDBS seeks to promote diversity and inclusion in biomedical sciences by providing research and career development opportunities for underrepresented groups in the field (as defined by the NIH). Our country benefits from the diversity of its citizens; a goal of our program is to ensure that the biomedical leaders of the future match this diverse profile.

BDBS Training

The focus of the BDBS training program is the research experience. However, participants receive training in written and oral communication of scientific data and learn about careers in biomedical science through workshops.

They are also given guidance in applying to PhD and MD/PhD programs and interact with postbaccalaureate interns, graduate students and postdoctoral trainees to experience first hand the process of preparing for a career as a leader in biomedical science.

BDBS Logistics

  • BDBS begins in late May and concludes in early August
  • A stipend of approximately $4,000 is provided to each trainee
  • Transportation to and from Boston is covered
  • Accomodations (university housing) are included

Please see the BDBS application page for information about eligibility for BDBS and about the online application process.
