Leading with Insight: Erica Paine's Experience with Tufts GSBS' HEOR Certificate

Erica Paine, VP of Value and Access at Chiesi, shares how Tufts University's Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) Certificate program expanded her expertise in market access and healthcare strategy, influencing her daily decision-making and leadership approach.
What motivated you to pursue this certificate?
"As a leader in Market Access who came from a commercial background, I recognized the need to upskill and learn a new perspective. Obtaining the HEOR certificate from Tufts was an easy choice. Having the opportunity to learn from some of the best and brightest in the HTA (Health Technology Assessment) world was a huge motivator for choosing Tufts."
Why did you choose Tufts University for your studies?
"Others in my organization had obtained HEOR certificates from other institutions. I wanted to add some diversity to our team’s education by choosing a different program. Tufts faculty came highly recommended, and I recognized the opportunity to learn from professors who are leading change in HTA and HEOR across the pharma industry in the US and globally."
Can you share a bit about your current role and how the HEOR certificate has influenced or continues to impact your daily work?
"As VP of Value and Access, I use the insights I learned through the HEOR certificate program almost daily. The most significant impact is in the questions I ask and the information I seek when making decisions about corporate strategy. I’m also able to challenge the teams I lead to look at their work through a different lens and encourage collaboration across the company for greater impact."
How would you describe your overall experience with the program?
"My experience with the program was challenging, in all the right ways. The content was engaging, and the project work gave me the opportunity to expand my thinking and expand my network. I learned almost as much from fellow students as I learned from the faculty, and this speaks to the caliber of students attracted to this program."
What were the key takeaways from the curriculum that have been most valuable to you?
"The perspective and knowledge I gained during the HEOR certificate program provided me valuable opportunities to help lead our organization during a time of significant upheaval in the US healthcare sector. The most memorable conversations are those that happened during live sessions, where we were able to ask meaningful questions and challenge each other about contemporary topics such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)."
What advice would you give to prospective students or professionals considering completing the certificate?
"I would encourage a broad spectrum of commercial and medical professionals to consider the program. It’s not only meaningful for HEOR professionals, it is helpful for anyone who wants to better understand the changing dynamics in the US healthcare system. The insights learned during this certificate program are invaluable to the current landscape."
