Dean's Message - September 23, 2024

A warm welcome to all of our new students!
Jaharis Building in the spring

Dear GSBS Community,

Welcome to all our newly enrolled students! The fall term is underway, and it is an ongoing pleasure to meet you all and to see you all going to classes and rotating in labs. We the faculty are committed to teaching you, mentoring you, fostering your graduate studies and preserving your well-being. I would like to extend a special welcome to the Master’s in Biomedical Research students, who constitute the inaugural cohort of this new graduate program. The Program Director, Peter Juo, recruited numerous enthusiastic faculty to give rotation overview talks to introduce the many opportunities available to them.

Congratulations to our GSBS SACNAS chapter. They applied for and achieved official chapter status from the national organization, which is only provided to groups that demonstrate a sustained and meaningful commitment to the mission of the national organization. Our chapter, led by Ivan Albino Flores, Iris Montes, Andrea Rebolledo Viveros and Ariana Calderon-Zavala, has consistently fostered community and outreach activities. We look forward to celebrating with them at the Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta on October 10 and at the SACNAS NDiSTEM national meeting in Phoenix at the end of October.

To foster student professional development, the Dean’s Office has arranged to have AIM HR Solutions offer their curriculum entitled “The Young Professional’s Roadmap to Success.” Topics to be covered include creating a professional development plan, emotional intelligence, leadership, time management, unconscious bias, effective presentations, etc. Since this is a pilot project, enrollment will be limited. Please sign up if interested.

By now most of you know that I am no longer serving ad interim and have agreed to serve on a more long-term basis. I will continue to serve and advocate for every member of the GSBS community as we develop and advance our research, educational and outreach programs. As with the Deans who preceded me, I view the Dean’s position as one of service to those whom I am given privilege to lead. Please let me and our talented and committed office staff know how we can support you.

Michael Chin, MD, PhD, Dean
