Dean's Message - June 6, 2022

Dear GSBS,

On May 27, we celebrated GSBS’s 2020 graduates. A few of our GSBS alumni joined the commencement festivities in Medford. It was lovely that they could be together for the day, especially since the weather was much nicer than at the Commencement ceremony the previous Sunday.

This event reminded me of the success of our alumni across the biomedical workforce. It fills me with pride that they got their start here. In the last few years, we have grown our connection with our 1200 GSBS alumni; some have reached back giving their time, expertise and resources to strengthen our school. They have taught in our courses - including Communities of Practice and Introduction to Drug Development – and served on our Board of Advisors. Two alumni, Shilpi Banerjee and Jonathan Schimmel, have also made bequests to GSBS.

This year, we established the Tufts GSBS Notable Alumni Celebration. We called on students, faculty and staff to nominate exceptional alumni for their success and service, and awardees were selected by a committee of alumni. 

These awardees include: Eric Rubin, the current editor of the New England Journal of Medicine; Sean Carroll, head of Education at HHMI and popular science writer; and John Trojanowski (posthumous) who with his wife and collaborator Virginia Lee, first identified the role of Tau protein in Alzheimer’s Disease. The complete list is can be found in this news item. 

We will honor these awardees at a virtual celebration on Thursday, June 9 at 7:30 pm. I hope many of you can join.
