Dean's Message - August 9, 2021

Enjoy the last month of summer as we prepare for an exciting fall semester.

Dear GSBS Community,

It is already August and I have been enjoying recent GSBS events. The Relays were on July 30 and it was so wonderful to see so many students at our first schoolwide in-person event. Congratulations to Team Immunogenetics for their victory and thanks to GSC for organizing such a lovely summer’s day.

August 5 saw the conclusion of the BDBS symposium, featuring excellent posters by the summer research students and a great talk by one of our former postdocs and IRACDA scholars, Laverne Mélon (Wesleyan University). Many thanks to Jamie Maguire for this great program, which is so important to cultivating the next generation of scientists. This year’s program was fully remote, which came with extra challenges, but thanks to Jamie’s efforts BDBS remained a great experience for the students. Finally, thanks to Alex Israel for all her help in making both these events successful.

As summer winds down, I hope that you can all enjoy time with friends and family, as you relax and recharge yourself in preparation for an in-person fall semester. This has been a challenging and isolating year and a half, and we look forward to seeing you all on campus this fall.

Dan Jay, Dean
