Biomedical Therapeutics Admissions

Students seeking admission to the Experiential PhD in Biomedical Therapeutics program apply to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The program begins each September and is open to candidates employed by participating companies.

The PhD in Biomedical Therapeutics is committed to diversity and encourages applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences that will enrich the mix of students on our campus. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact gsbs-admissions@tufts.edu prior to submitting an application to discuss eligibility and financial arrangements. Applications for both partner-sponsored and self-pay candidates are submitted through the official online portal, which will be made available to qualified individuals following this initial consultation.

Tuition and Sponsorship

Students employed by participating institutions with a formal agreement with Tufts are fully sponsored by their employer, covering all tuition costs. Self-pay students are fully responsible for all tuition and fees but may seek partial reimbursement through employer education benefits. All financial arrangements must be agreed upon in advance between the employee and employer. Tufts University does not offer stipends, scholarships, discounts, or any other financial support for this program.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Fully-sponsored candidates must be employed by a participating company.
  • Hold a master’s degree in a relevant field.

Selection Criteria

  • Submit a letter from your employer confirming their support for your thesis research, including permission to dedicate time to the project and full financial sponsorship. If you are self-funding, instead provide a detailed plan outlining how you will cover the cost of your studies.
  • Academic credentials equivalent to GSBS Basic Science PhD requirements.
  • No minimum work experience required.

Essay Prompts

  1. Academic Statement of Purpose (750 words max): Share your journey as a scientist, research experiences, professional goals, and why this program is the right fit for you.
  2. Personal Statement (750 words max): Tell us about yourself, your character, and how you would contribute to the Tufts community.
  3. More Information (Optional, 250 words max): Highlight unique experiences, identities, or inspirations that have driven your career in science.

Admissions Process

Applications are reviewed by the Program Director and faculty from the candidate’s chosen program area. Competitive applicants will be invited for an interview with the Program Director and an additional faculty member.
