Selection Criteria

We seek highly motivated individuals with:

  • A strong interest in microbial genetics, host–pathogen interactions, or infectious disease biology
  • Prior research experience (strongly preferred, but not required)
  • Clear goals in academic research, teaching, biotechnology, or clinical microbiology
  • Collegiality, communication skills, and commitment to collaborative science

Competitive applicants typically hold undergraduate degrees in biology or related fields and have prior training in genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, organic chemistry, physics, and calculus and have completed a basic course in microbiology.

Prospective applicants are evaluated based on prior grades, three letters of recommendation, and responses to the short essays that are part of the application. Acceptance is determined by the applicant’s prospects of success, as demonstrated by academic transcripts and references.

Application Components

Optional Specialized Training Tracks

The MMB program includes two NIH-supported training tracks:

  • MERGE-ID (Medically-Oriented Research in Graduate Education) – Focuses on hypothesis-driven research in the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of infectious diseases. Applicants must select MERGE-ID during the application process to be considered for this track.
  • Molecular Genetics – Offers rigorous training in microbial molecular genetics and mechanisms of gene regulation.
