Clinical and Translational Science (CTS) Program Timeline for Health Professional Students
The Clinical and Translational Science (CTS) program is designed to integrate smoothly with the Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) MD curriculum. MD students may choose either the 1-year CTS Certificate program or the 2-year MS degree option, depending on their academic and career goals. Below is a typical timeline showing when to apply and how CTS coursework fits into medical school training for MD students.
MD Students Completing CTS Certificate
Years 1-3: Focus on the MD Curriculum
Students follow the standard MD curriculum and complete required milestones, including the USMLE Step 2 exam. No CTS coursework is taken during this time.
When to apply: MD students typically apply to CTS during Year 3 and enroll in the CTS program following Year 3. Students are encouraged to apply by the early decision deadline of December 1 when possible, though applications submitted by the May 1 deadline will also be considered.
Year 4: CTS Certificate Year
After completing Step 2, students complete the CTS Graduate Certificate, which runs July through mid‑May.
Return to MD Training: Clinical Rotations
After completing the CTS Certificate (or MS), students return to the MD program. Students return to MD clinical rotations in early May. CTS students are excused from rotations for one morning in May to attend the CTS Symposium.
