Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Najah Walton

At GSBS, we are facing head-on the systemic inequity and injustice that touch so many parts of our society – including higher education. We are committed to building a culture where every voice is heard and valued. By supporting our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, you help us build a community where diverse perspectives, ideas, and lived experiences are not only celebrated, but seen as fundamental to fostering collaboration, promoting excellence, and driving discovery.

Welcoming Students - Changing the World

As a leader in biomedical education, we believe that the best science demands diversity of thought, experience, and background. Our long-running pipeline programs and active recruiting for candidates who are under-represented in science is growing our compositional diversity at GSBS. We are also committed to building a diverse and welcoming community where all students can meet their full potential. Toward that goal, the student-inspired GSBS Anti-Racist Working Group provides an open forum to discuss DEI concerns and recommendations. Moreover, this group is advising the Dean’s Team on the best use of resources, and they closely monitor the outcomes. With your help, the DEI Fund is providing the means to activate those recommendations to build a more just and equitable GSBS community.

What You Can Support

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is one of the school’s top priorities. When you support our DEI efforts, we can quickly respond to current events around social justice and equity, as well as plan and execute longer-term initiatives. Key aspects of our important work in this area include:

  • Seminar series, panels, and film discussions – Events that generate facilitated discussion throughout the GSBS community around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and in the context of the scientific community.
  • Student and faculty training – Dedicated training to promote DEI in and beyond the lab, and prepare our students to be effective leaders in team science.
  • Recruitment/Retention – Doubling down on outreach activities to attract and retain students who are under-represented in science and building out feeder school programs.
  • Cultural Dinners – These popular outings introduce GSBS students to Boston’s many diverse neighborhoods by giving them a student or faculty-led tour of the area followed by a taste of the local cuisine, with dinner discussion focused on the neighborhood’s history and culture.
