Stipends & Documentation
Students who have been awarded a 12-month stipend are paid on the 15th and 30th of the month (or slightly adjusted for holidays or weekends), 12 months per year.
Under the 1986 Federal Tax Reform Act, a stipend is considered taxable income and the University is required to withhold income tax from your check.
In order to be paid, you must complete online W-4 and Direct Deposit forms. You must also complete an I-9, which is also done online, and follow this up with an in-person document verification. Human Resources will send information to your Tufts e-mail address about how to complete these forms once you have been hired by your program. The hiring process is typically completed about two weeks before you start school.
Note that a social security number is required in order to complete your payroll paperwork. International students who do not already have a social security number should contact the International Center for information on starting that process.
