Research synopsis:

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a gram-positive bacterium that normally asymptomatically colonizes the human respiratory tract, but can also cause invasive disease such as meningitis, otitis media and pneumonia. Neutrophils, which are innate immune cells, are critical for both immune defense against pneumococcal infection, as well as for tissue damage that leads to severe disease. The elderly are at increased risk of pneumococcal pneumonia and my research aims to investigate the role of neutrophils in this susceptibility.
