Research synopsis:

There are two well-characterized receptor pathways in Vibrio cholerae, and our lab recently identified an additional two parallel pathways, based on the histidine kinases CqsR and VpsS, that also integrate into the quorum sensing circuit. I am characterizing the VpsS pathway and hope to identify the cognate signal for VpsS and its corresponding biosynthesis pathway by using genetic screens, quorum sensing reporter bioassays, and chemical characterization of identified molecules and enzymes. The results of this project should further our understanding of the control of quorum sensing and virulence in V. cholerae.
