Research synopsis:

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas disease that may lead to heart failure and death. T. cruzi uses the circulation to invade the heart and other organs where it lives in the cytoplasm of various cell types. But it in order to reach its habitat, T. cruzi must cross the endothelial barrier, otherwise it will perish. However, mechanisms underlying T. cruzi transendothelial migration remains unknown. My research project focuses on ascertaining the molecular basis of T. cruzi-endothelium interaction that leads to heart infection.
