Research synopsis:

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent and unpredictable seizures, affecting about 1 in every 26 people in the United States. Seizures manifest from hyperactive, hypersynchronous network firing in the brain, where there is too much excitation and impaired or reduced inhibition, for unknown reasons. Employing electrophysiology and biochemistry, I am investigating how chloride homeostasis can be pharmacologically modulated in neurons to enhance network inhibition and combat epileptiform activity.
