Research synopsis:

Proper sensing and response of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) to its local ionic environment is vital for successful host colonization, and we have previously identified chloride as a novel cue that the bacterium responds to in synergy with pH. My project focuses on understanding how chemical perturbation of the response of Mtb to these signals can disrupt the bacterial adaptation process and benefit the host. This encompasses elucidation of the functional and mechanistic properties of unique small molecule compounds that modulate the bacterial chloride response, and their use in murine infection models in combination with our fluorescent reporter Mtb strains.
