Research synopsis:

Despite the impact of alcohol use disorders on society, the underlying neural mechanisms contributing to alcohol abuse are not well understood. Inhibitory GABAergic neurons have been implicated in both mediating and regulating effects of alcohol consumption and withdrawal. Using an intermittent access paradigm to alcohol to induce alcohol dependence, my research utilizes CRISPR-Cas9 and electrophysiology to define the role of the δ subunit-containing GABAA receptors in anxiety-like behaviors specifically during alcohol withdrawal.
