Research synopsis: 

Frightening experiences modify patterns of neural circuit activity to permit behavioral flexibility. Over the years, researchers have been looking for clues of such modifications by performing studies on fear conditioning and extinction learning. This paradigm results in the competition between memories that either promote or suppress fear behavior, thereby generating insights into fear-related disorders such as generalized anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and specific phobias. I am focusing my research on the cholecystokinin (CCK) neuropeptide system through manipulations of CCK-expressing neurons during the acquisition and extinction of conditioned fear behavior.
