Research synopsis:

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a bacterial oral pathogen commonly associated with periodontitis, an inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the teeth. In addition to local oral manifestations, periodontitis has been associated with systemic inflammatory disorders in humans, including atherosclerosis and in a mouse model used in our lab we have shown that oral infection with P. gingivalis accelerates the development of atherosclerosis. Since joining the lab I have been studying how P. gingivalis manipulates autophagy by host cells. This presumably helps P. gingivalis to persist in the oral cavity and possibly plays a role in the systemic manifestations of oral P. gingivalis infection.
