Research synopsis:

My research focuses on understanding how Shiga toxin, a protein toxin produced by Enterohemorrhagic E. coli, moves across the colonic epithelial barrier. Breaching of the colonic epithelial monolayer by Shiga toxin results in the development of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) as it trafficks to the kidneys and other distal organs. Understanding how Shiga toxin breaches the epithelial barrier may shed light on a way in which to inhibit Shiga toxin translocation and thus prevent HUS development.
