Research synopsis:

Our lab is focused on corneal immunology and the understanding of how corneal immune cells and corneal nerves interact. I am involved in different projects that aim to investigate the role of plasmacytoid dendritic cells and corneal nerve bundles in different in vivo inflammatory and neuropathic models as HSV-1 infection, corneal transplantation, dry eye disease, ciliary nerve axotomy or ligation, and the sterile inflammation by corneal suture placement. I am also focused on elucidating the mechanism of action of Lifitegrast, an antagonist of Lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1, an FDA drug approved to treat dry eye disease. Additionally, using 2-photon microscopy and transgenic animals, I am particularly interested in elucidating immune cell kinetics during the steady state and in the inflammatory and neuropathic models mentioned above.
