Research synopsis:

The K+/Cl- co-transporter 2 (KCC2) is selectively expressed in the adult brain and is responsible for maintaining low intracellular Cl- levels. Therefore, regulation of KCC2 activity is crucial in mediating GABAergic inhibition. Defects in KCC2 function lead to epilepsy and have also been implicated in neurological disorders. In the AstraZeneca Tufts Laboratory of Basic and Translational Neuroscience, I am investigating the role of autism susceptibility gene products in the regulation of KCC2 activity.
