Epileptic seizures are comorbid to many psychiatric pathologies which impact patient quality of life even during periods of seizure quiescence. Some patients present with anxiety symptoms temporally unrelated to the presence of seizures (interictal anxiety). Parvalbumin interneurons in the BLA have recently been implicated as regulators of an anxiolytic pathway between the BLA and PFC. Further, studies have shown that these PV+ interneurons are vulnerable in seizure models. Using behavioral models, in vivo single unit, field, and fiber photometry recordings in tandem with genetic and viral tools, I will study the role of BLA PV+ interneurons on network communication and behavioral phenotype in the context of anxiety comorbid to epilepsy.
