Foundation Fellowships

A number of foundations support graduate education and offer fellowship opportunities.  Many of these groups target students working in particular areas or have other special requirements.  Additional information about these opportunities can be found at the web sites for the different foundations. 

American Association of University Women

American Fellowship

The AAUW aims to advance educational and professional opportunities for women around the globe. The American Fellowship program provides one year of support for women in their final year of writing their dissertation.

International Fellowship

This program, also offered by the AAUW, is for women doing research in the United States who are not US Citizens or permanent residents. One year of support is awarded and may be renewed for a second year.

American Heart Association

Predoctoral Fellowship Program

The American Heart Association offers predoctoral fellowships through their affiliates. The Founders Affiliate supports students enrolled in Massachusetts and other institutions in our region. This fellowship supports research related to cardiovascular disease and function and stroke, including bioengineering or biotechnology approaches to these problems. The research can be basic or public health related.

American Physiological Society

Porter Physiology Development Award

This fellowship is designed to promote diversity in the physiological sciences. Predoctoral trainees from groups underrepresented in physiological disciplines and enrolled in physiology PhD programs are eligible for the program.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

PhD Fellowship

This program promotes basic research in biomedicine by providing 2-3 years of fellowship support. European citizens working in the United States are eligible to apply.

Josephine De Karman Fellowship Trust

De Karman Dissertation Fellowships

This program provides one year support for preparation of the dissertation. The awards are not targeted to a particular area of scholarship and are not limited to individuals training in the biomedical sciences.

National Academy of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine

Ford Foundation Fellowship Program

The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties. The program offers both three-year predoctoral fellowships and one-year dissertation fellowships.

Paul and Daisy Soros

Fellowship for New Americans

This graduate fellowship program is for new Americans who are pursuing graduate training in virtually any area. The program focuses on aiding new Americans with advanced education and is not focused on biomedical or other science research but does offer funding in this area. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America

Predoctoral Fellowship Program

The PhRMA fellowship program supports research related to pharmacology, toxicology, informatics, pharmaceutics, and health outcomes.
